The Federal Authority for Identity and Citizenship is tasked with establishing the ‘Population Register and Emirates Identity Card Program’, which includes recording personal and other important data for the entire population in the United Arab Emirates and maintaining them in electronic formats. The authority is in charge of issuing the Emirates ID Card to citizens and other persons resident in the United Arab Emirates. ID card features

The Emirates ID card consists of the following components which provide the highest levels of accuracy and security. The components are:

  • Smart card
  • Public key infrastructure (Digital signature and authentication certificates)
  • Fingerprint biometric.

Identification number

The identity card is featured for its identification number known as the identity number which sticks with its holder forever. By this number, he may benefit from all the governmental and some of the non-governmental and private entities services, which require the identity card as evidence of who is accessing the service. The identity number is featured for its sole and un-repeated number. It includes 15 digits.

Electronic chip

It contains the personal data of the holder. This data can be read by a machine built for this purpose and authenticate the user’s credentials. Some of these data are encrypted and only readable/writable/updatable by the authorized authorities in order to protect the privacy of data. This chip may store up to 32,000 letters of information.

Other technologies

The identity card has state-of-the-art technology in the field of smart cards, including accurate letters, ultraviolet ink, and line drawing. It has nine security features which make falsification of the card very difficult for such features excels the currently used standards in many cards such as the banking credit cards.

Getting Emirates ID

For getting an Emirates ID card, the applicant has to fill the eForm at Arabian Business Centre or through the online form available on the website of the Federal Authority for Identity and Citizenship (FAIC). An SMS containing information about when and where to register will follow the application. The applicant will need to proceed to the registration centre mentioned in the SMS to complete the procedures.

What is Emirates ID?

How long does it take to get Emirates ID after visa stamping?

7-10 days
Getting the Emirates ID

It usually takes 7-10 days to get the ID card after you have done the visa stamping into your passport. You will be receiving SMS messages during the processing of your ID with the updates.

When can you renew your Emirates ID?

The time limit to renew an expired ID card is 30 days from the date of expiry, after which late fines of AED 20 per day will apply, with a maximum of AED 1,000 (one thousand).

Note that after the Emirates ID expires, the ID holder must apply for its renewal. Federal Authority for Identity and Citizenship (FAIC) will send you a notification via SMS requesting you to renew your ID card. You can submit your renewal application in person at Arabian Business Centre or online via the website of FAIC.

You might need to visit one of FAIC’s service centres or preventive medical centres to provide your biometric details.

How early can the Emirates ID be renewed?

  • UAE nationals can apply for renewal of Emirates ID between six and one months before the expiry date.
  • UAE residence visa holders can only apply for renewal when their residence visa is renewed or reissued.
